The main football team in Rethymnon is called Asteras Rethymnon - www.neosasteras.gr. After 2 seasons in the professional national league (Γ division), they are back in the Cretan regional league for the 2009-2010 season. Too many problems off and on the pitch meant that the results weren’t as expected. So they take a step back and try again. The draw for the calendar is set for September 2nd and as soon as it is announced the schedule will be published here. The home games are played at the Sochoras Football Ground - near the bus station. Other regional teams in the same league include Episkopi, Anogia and Perama. Krisses Rethymnon is the women’s football team, and they play in the national league. The 2007-2008 season gave them a first taste of what it is like to play at that level and last season they kind of established themselves at that level. www.agor.gr - will be playing in the A2 division for the season
2009-2010. Last season’s ambition to bounce back immediately to the
top level of Greek basket was unfortunately not fulfilled. The
highlight in the history of the team is without a doubt playing in
the Greek Cup Final against the mighty Panathinaikos in March 2007. For the 2009-2010 season a new team has been put together with a new coach but with the same ambition – promotion to the A1 league. The home games are played at the Melina Mercouri Sports complex near the bus station. The fixtures list and table, when made available, can be found here. The competition is set to start on 17/10/2009 In the women’s basketball, the team from the club OKA Arkadi Rethymnon were the champions of the Regional Cretan Division in 2007-2008, which meant that for the first time in the history of the club, they would be playing at national level in the A2 division for the 2008-2009 season. It was tough though, realising that there is a big gap between the regional and national competition. So it was not really a surprise that after one year, they are back in the Cretan regional division, but with a lot more experience under their belt, and the urge to prove that they are good enough for the national level. |

Rethymnon these days is a women’s affair. After a few years in the
regional competition, OPER was crowned as the Cretan champions for
the 2008-2009 season. And in a play-off competition with the
champions of other regional competitions they deservedly won
promotion to the A2 division. During the summer the team has added some valuable experience with some new players, but also kept all of last season’s players. They’re feeling confident.
