The main Post Office on Moatsou will be closed for refurbishment for at least 3 months. For the general post services, there is now a temporary office diagonally across the road, on the corner with Chatzidaki Street. As these premises are much smaller, for some services one has to go to another office:

  • Post packages: these should now be collected from the post office in Kalithea, opposite the Minos Hotel (at the triangular roundabout)
  • For personal post boxes, one should go to the main sorting office, which is in Koubes, opposite the BP Petrol station (the one on the right going out of Rethymnon

Paving the streets in the Old Town.
After a delay of several months, work to pave the streets of the Old Town has finally started. Some streets are already finished, but some shop owners in Arabatsoglou are not happy for work to start in their street, as they are already open for business. The depute mayor Kostas Iliakis, is hoping that they will change their mind, as work is not expected to take more than 2 weeks. Later in the year, the local authorities plan to pave the streets from Nikifora Foka towards the Nomarchiea. The plan is that by Spring 2009 all the streets in the Old Town will have been paved.

Ferry Update - Hellenic Seaways is now operating the Piraeus - Rethymnon service, using their Highspeed 4 catamaran, which completes the crossing in 4hrs 45mins. For further details see the Getting Here page.

04/03/2008

The annual saga of the ferry crisis has arrived again. After the decision by NEL Lines not to continue their service with the Aiolis Kenteris I, a feverish search started to find a company that would be able to replace this service. Hellenic Seaways (HighSpeed 5) seems to be that company, although they seem to have problems getting their schedule approved by the appropriate authorities

In the meantime, ANEK, who provide a ferry connection between Piraeus and Rethymnon with F/B Prevelis, have decided to stop this 3/week service - last available online booking on Monday, March 10th, leaving Rethymnon at 20.00hrs

This would result in Rethymnon not having a ferry link with the mainland for at least a week, if not longer. We'll keep you posted.

31/12/2007 - The town council has produced a calendar with photos of artworks that are on display in several shops in Arkadiou, Tsouderon and Ethnikis Antistaseos (Market Street). The calendar costs 10€ and proceeds will go to local families that experience financial difficulties. The calendars can be bought from the shops in which the art is on display, the Town Hall, the Prefecture Hall and KEP offices.

20/12/2007 - The first Carnival committee meeting has taken place - attending were the representatives of the the town hall and the carnival groups. The first dates of importance have been released and the Rethymnon Carnival Festivities will begin on February 17th and the Big Parade will take place on March 9th. Put these dates in your diaries..

07/12/2007 - There will be a National Strike on Wednesday, 12th December, organised by the National Unions - they are not happy with the proposed pension reforms. Expect some disruption in some aspects of daily life.

07/12/2007 - Problems in the Β' and Γ' football divisions. Games have been postponed for a third weekend in a row. The super league was supposed to have paid over 2 million euro as part of the deal when the super league was created. This payment has still not arrived (it was due in 2006). As this money is essential to the clubs in the  Β' and Γ' divisions, there is a temporary halt to the competition.

07/10/2007 - Asteras Rethymnon were not able to continue their winning ways against Koropi. Final score at the Sochora ground was 0-0. Asteras were definitely the better team, but Lady Fortuna was not on their side today. Still, 7 points out of 9 is not a bad start to the season.

07/10/2007 - The 5th Cretan Marathon that should have been run in Rethymnon has been cancelled. From the information on their website, this appeared to have been due to technical problems. It will now be organized in the autumn of 2008 in Irakleion. Info can be found on www.cretamarathon.gr

01/10/2007 - Asteras Rethymnon makes it 2 wins out of 2 games and top the table. Yesterday they beat Thebes 0-1 away.
AGOR (Rethymnon Almeco) made a good start in the Greek Basketball Cup. As an A1 team they had a bye for phase A and won their first 2 phase B games. On Wednesday 03/10/07 they will play AEK Athens (A1 team) in Rethymnon - if they win this game, they will have reached the quarter finals.

23/09/2007 - Asteras Rethymnon have won their first competition game of the new season. They beat Messiniakos 2-0 in front of a large crowd. Follow this link to see the fixtures list and table.

21/09/2007 - First rainfall for almost 4 months in Rethymnon. A serious downpour tested the drainage system, but no problems were reported. The temperature has dropped, and there are lots of tourists in town, and very few on the beach.

18/09/2007 - A recount of the personal votes for the candidates for Nea Demokratia had as result that the new representative for the party is not, as mentioned earlier, Kostas Schinas, but Olga Kefaloyianni, daughter of the outgoing ND representative. Olga managed to receive 24 votes more than Kostas...

17/09/2007 - A day after the National Elections, Rethymnon is the only prefecture in Crete where PASOK is no longer the biggest party. This, however, has no impact on the number of representatives for the parliament: PASOK has one representative - Ilias Lambiris - and Nea Demokratia have one representative - Kostas Schinas.
The small parties, both on the left and right of centre, were the only ones that managed to increase their share of votes; a trend that is reflected at national level as well.

16/09/2007 - Rethymnon takes part in the European Mobility Week. During this week, several events are being organised to promote mobility in town. The full program of events is listed in the Special Events Section.
