The Church of St. Francis

The Church of St. Francis is located halfway down Ethniki Antistaseos, as one walks into the old town from the Guora Gate.  The church is one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture in Rethymnon.  The church originally belonged to a Franciscan monastery.  The church is a single-aisled wooden roofed basilica.  The ground floor windows and the main doorway on the North side appear to be of a later date than the rest of the building.  The doorway is of particular architectural importance due to its elaborate decorations.  The Church of St. Francis has undergone extensive restoration work and is now occasionally used as an exhibition hall.
