Music has always been at the heart of the people of Rethymnon.
Manolis Stagakis was the father of the modern day lyre. He
built the first one in 1940. Many people have followed him in
the art of musical instrument building. The famous lyre player
Kostas Mountakis played a very big part in getting international
recognition for Cretan music. There is an active 'live' scene for
the Traditional Cretan Music, however it is also acknowledged that
there is a place for modern music. A listing of
